Master Hale houses barley that looks like old thatch. Much barley about the country, & some wheat. Some pheasants found in the manour. The sound of great guns was heard distinctly this day to the S.E. probably from Goodwood, where the Duke of Richmond has a detachment from the train of artillery encamped in his park, that he may try experiments with some of the ordnance.
Wheat out at Buriton, Froxfield, Ropely, & other places.
Gathered-in the white pippins, about a bushel; many were blown down last week. Oats housed.
Hop-picking becomes general; & the women leave their gleaning in the wheat-stubbles. Wheat grows as it stands in the shocks.
Floods out in several parts of the kingdom, & much hay & corn destroyed. Young buzzards follow their dams with a piping, wailing noise.
Men bind their wheat all day. The harvesters complain of heat. The hand-glass cucumbers begin to bear well: red kidney beans begin to pod.
Farmer Tull begins to reap wheat. The hop-garden at Kimber’s fails again, & looks black.
Alton
Rye cut & bound at Clapham. Wheat looks well, & turns colour. Hay making at Farnham: pease are hacking near the town; hops distempered.
Onions rot. Barley round the village very fine.
