The woods, & hedges are beautifully fringed with snow. Ordered thomas carefully to beat-off the snow that lodges on the Sought side of the laurels & laurustines.

Some snow on the ground. Many trees were stripped last night: vine-leaves begin to fall. Winter-weather. Gathered the barberries, a vast crop.
Snow was halfshoe-deep on the hill. Distant lightening.
The ground was covered with snow at Buxton in Derbyshire.
Rugged, Siberian weather. The narrow lanes are full of snow in some places, which is driven into the most romantic, & grotesque shapes. The road-waggons are obliged to stop, & the stage-coaches are much embarassed. I was obliged to be much abroad on this day, & scarce ever saw its fellow.
The snow is drifted-up to the tops of gates, & the lanes are full. Poultry do not stir-out of the hen-houses: they are amazed, & confounded in snow, & would soon perish.
Gathered-in all the grapes. Snow on the hills.
First day of winter. Snow on the ground.
