This cool, shady summer is not good for mens fallows, which are heavy, & weedy. Lettuces have not loaved, or bleached well this summer.

The double roses rot in the bud without blowing out: an instance this of the coldness, & wetness of the summer. Potatoes blossom.

Cut down & covered the artichokes: covered the rhubarb plants; & the lettuces under the fruit-wall, & the spinage very lightly with straw.

Planted a row of Hyacinths on the verge of the fruit-border; & tulips along the broad walk. Planted winter-cabbages. Potatoes dug up.
