The Natural History of Selborne

The barometer unusually low considering there is little wind.  The astonishing fall of the glass was remarked all the kingdom over: we had no wind, & not much rain, ; only vast swagging rock-like clouds appear’d at a distance.

Many sorts of flies still appear, the musca carnaria, meridiana, tenax, &c.

The Ground dries much.  Wheat continues to be sown.  Elms are still in full leaf.

Fallows begin to work well.  Woodcocks in the high wood.

Glass rises violently.  Planted a plot of cabbages to stand the winter.  Wheat is sown.

Bat appears.  Hedge-hogs cease to dig the walks.

Bucks grunt.

Fine grey day. Fallows glutted with water, and full of weeds.  Wells rise very fast.

Grapes are very good, but decay apace.

Some wheat is now sowing.
