The Natural History of Selborne

The cuckow is heard in the forest of Bere.  Grass grows apace.  The great black & white Gull, larus maximus ex albo & nigro seu caeruleo nigricante varius Raii, was shot lately near Chawton:  Larus marinus Linn: The head & part of the neck of this bird is dotted with black small spots.

Titlark whistles.

Termes pulsatorium raps. Death-watch vulg.

Wood lark sits.  Hirundo domestica!  Swallow comes early.  Cock snipe pipes & hums in the air.  Is the latter sound ventriloquous, or from the rapid motion of the wings?  The bird always descends when that noise is made, & the wings are violently agitated.

Uncrested wren chirps.  Barometer falls apace.  Ants appear.

Mackaral sky, wheel round the sun.  Clouds in horizon.

Merula torquata on it’s spring visit.  Thunder.  One cock ring-ouzel appears on Nore-hill on it’s spring visit, but earlier than common.

The ground too wet for ploughing.

Planted-out some rudiments of stout cucumr plants into the bearing beds: rudiments of fruit show.

Tussilago farfara.  Considerable mischief was done by this storm near & in London.
