The Natural History of Selborne

Cold dew.  Mulberry begins to cast some leaves.  Tops of beeches in the hanger begin to look pale.

The whame, or barrel-fly of Derham, lays nits or eggs on the legs and sides of horses at grass.  See physicotheology.

Rock-like clouds.  Oats & pease are cutting.

Vast storms about.  Crickets are silent.

Gathered frenchbeans.

Threat’ning clouds at a distance, but most delicate ripening weather.

Martins begin to congregate on the maypole.  Ricked my little mead, & finish’d my Hay-making.

Vast aurora borealis.  The white owl has young.  It brings a mouse to its nest about every five minutes beginning at sunset.  Hay in tollerable order.  Cut my little mead.

Young swallows are able to take flies for themselves.
